MIB 3 Maybe ...?

Parade has a quote from some producer saying both Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones want number 3.

“ The challenge is getting the script right and finding a time when our busy stars are available,”

“But everyone, including Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, wants to do another.”

Will has moved on I think while Tommy Lee would jump at it I'd imagine.

Mickey Rourke Will Win Best Oscar...

... according to this.

The LA Times have pooled the views of seven pundits and asked for their predictions for the Oscars.

Very interesting.

Alice In Wonderland For The First Time

Ginger sent me this pic and a link to news on the Cornwall set of Tim Burton’s Disney 3-D animated adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s Alice In Wonderland.

Mia Wasikowska plays the lead and certainly looks the part.

Splinter Trailer

It's called Splinter.

A young couple has retreated to the wilderness for a romantic camping weekend-but the trip quickly spirals into a nightmare when they are car-jacked by an escaped convict and his girlfriend. Thrown together by chance, no one can imagine the terrifying horror that awaits the two couples at a remote and isolated gas station.

Here is the trailer.

Helen Mirren's A Mossad Agent

Dame Helen Mirren's next film will see her play a Mossad agent who covers up the re-emergence of a Nazi war criminal. Hmmm. The 63-year-old minx has signed up for the lead role in The Debt.

Paul Newman - R.I.P. - Newspaper Round-up

LONDON (Reuters) - Images of U.S. actor Paul Newman, who died late on Friday, adorned newspaper front pages around the world on Sunday, his piercing blue eyes vying for attention alongside headlines of the global financial crisis.

Underlining Newman's international appeal, Britain's Independent on Sunday featured his photograph across the whole of page one, relegating the latest news of the country's banking woes to the inside pages.

"Paul Newman: Death of King Cool" ran the caption headline in the Sunday Times above a portrait of the heartthrob and philanthropist, who died of cancer aged 83.

The Observer weekly devoted a two-page spread under the words: "An Actor of True Genius and a Man of Great Decency," focussing on Newman's philanthropy and devotion to his family, as well as on his big screen roles.

In France, politicians lined up to praise Newman, with President Nicolas Sarkozy hailing him as a "Hollywood legend."

"Actor, author, screenwriter, director, producer and philanthropist, he was also a great friend of France and fans of motor racing will remember his successive appearances at the Le Mans 24-hour race," he said in a statement.

"The death of a good guy," France's main Sunday newspaper, Le Journal du Dimanche, said in a headline, giving over most of its front page to a photo of the U.S. actor.

Even conservative Muslim Iran, which would not usually concern itself with reporting on a Western film star, marked his death. Two pro-reform newspapers displayed the actor on their front pages while Iran's state media also reported his death.

The Etemad newspaper, published Newman's picture, saying "Fading away the last classic star" and the Kargozaran daily said "End of the blue-eyed boy."

In Germany as elsewhere, news television channels have been showing clips from his films.

"Paul Newman - the Last Hero is Dead" ran a headline on the back page of the mass-selling Bild am Sonntag. A strapline in the same newspaper read: "This damn cancer. Now it has killed the bluest eyes in the world!"

Several obituaries repeated comments he made about his famous good looks.

"I picture my epitaph," he was quoted as saying. "Here lies Paul Newman, who died a failure because his eyes turned brown."

"WHAT PAIN!" SAYS LOREN

The New York Times called him a "magnetic Hollywood titan," and in Italy actress Sophia Loren, who appeared in the film Lady L with Newman, called the news "a blow."

"When such important personalities die, one despairs and thinks that, little by little, all the greats are disappearing," she told the Il Messaggero daily.

Israeli actor Haim Topol, who Newman helped to set up camps for children with incurable diseases, called him a "dear human being."

"He busied himself with the professional rather than with PR," Topol told Israel Radio. "His main motto was, 'If you do not exploit your success in order to improve things in the world, then you are really wasting it'."

Paul Leonard Newman, known as "PL" to friends, appeared in more than 50 movies, including Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid and The Sting.

He earned nine Oscar nominations for acting and won the best actor award for 1986's The Colour Of Money.

A director and race car driver as well as an actor, Newman was also known for his extensive philanthropy. He created Newman's Own food products, which funnelled more than $250 million (136 million pounds) in profits to thousands of charities worldwide.

Newman said his deepest satisfaction came from philanthropy.

Particularly close to his heart were his Hole-in-the-Wall Camps for seriously ill children. Today, there are 11 around the world that have helped over 135,000 kids, all free of charge.

Newman is survived by his wife of 50 years Joanne Woodward, five daughters, two grandsons, and his older brother, Arthur. Newman also had a son Scott, who died in 1978.

Bruno On The Catwalk

You've seen this surely ?

Sasha Baron-Cohen, best known for his eccentric character Borat, made a shock appearance on a Milan catwalk.

The actor brought the Agatha Ruiz de la Prada show to a halt, which resulted in security guards stepping in.

Baron-Cohen - who is in the Italian city making a new film based on his character Bruno, a flamboyant Austrian fashionista - was escorted off the catwalk and the show started again.

Despite the models keeping their cool, the Spanish designer was visibly upset when she appeared at the end of her show.

Ruiz de la Prada is famous for her brightly-coloured designs which represent humour, boldness and nature.

Ha ha !

Ellen Talks About On Screen Chemistry

On Screen Chemistry/Who Convinced Me Of Celluloid Love

To mark the upcoming DVD release of What Happens In Vegas I have decided to write about some of the films in which the stars have sizzled their way into my lusty loins to convince me of their on screen love. I have also mentioned a few who have not. Apart from the one above.

I was on a plane recently and realised that the only thing I had not seen from the film selection was Made Of Honour my only experience of this film being some Mark Kermode bashing, and although I do trust mostly everything he says this was a long flight and I did not want to watch Lord Of The Rings for the umpteenth time. I submitted myself to it knowing it would be bad. Also the fact Michelle Monaghan was in it made it seem like it would be slightly more bearable.

I was wrong.

My thoughts after viewing it were as follows:

Dear God someone should send Patrick Dempsey to the bottom of the Ocean, he has one role he can do and that is Dr. McDreamy and that is all, I hope his foot goes to sleep for ever and it really annoys him.

Scottish people will not like this film since it takes every single stereotype and morphs the country itself into a land of bagpipe playing, kilt wearing and whiskey drinking where no one is as lovely or friendly as the Americans who visit it.

There is no sexual chemistry between the leads due to the fact they are both awful people. There is not the slightest hint of believability that they were best friends to start with let alone audience willingness for them to end as lovers, they both deserve to be exploded.

This tangent brings me on to good chemistry and Kiss,Kiss Bang,Bang in which Monaghan and Robert Downey Jr. are excellent, and I spent the entire film just rooting for some kind of pay off kiss, even though typically I don’t like seeing anyone kiss Mr Downey Jr. on screen (upsetting) least of all someone skinnier then me. That’s how I knew they had good on screen chemistry, when I wanted even in this very silly (for the right reasons) film the leading couple to smooch. When they did it resulted in a little “woo” in my cynical heart.

So here are some notable films I think contain actors who have that sexual and wonderful chemistry that makes me believe a little bit in celluloid love.

Lets start with Rachel Weiz and Hugh Jackman in Darren Aronofsky’s The Fountain, a confusing beautiful mess of a love story documenting love vs mortality across several different time genres. This film’s plot is hard to explain succinctly due to the fact that I did not completely comprehend what was going on. Weiz’s character has cancer and Jackman is doing monkey experiments related to regeneration from death… and then there is a tree, a Spanish queen and a floating bubble…. However it was one of those films where complete understanding is not necessarily important due to the underlying message combined with the on screen chemistry between the two leads actors.

It was a film to be appreciated for it’s central themes of love and loss, and not dissected. Basically I cried a lot in it, and Weiz and Jackman made my heart break a little bit. But then I got some flintstones band aids and stuck it back together again.

Next we move on to The Notebook, and before you all groan in unison and wonder whether you are reading the Glamour site by mistake, I know it is massive in its failings and its methods of emotional blackmail are pathetic BUT I like it so screw you.

Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams have some sexy chemistry in it and I find her an admirable female character, feisty yet slightly vulnerable and although Gosling is a bit monosyllabic you can tell they are totally doing it in real life. They have some real life sparks going on which is evident on screen and do some amazing kissing in the rain scenes which I thought Four Weddings And A Funeral had ruined forever. The premise of this film is that some old lady with Alzheimer’s is being read a story by a old man which we see unfolding on screen, and it is the story of how they got together but she can’t remember it (and she is wearing some questionable shoulder padded jacket.)

Unfortunately you can see this “twist” a mile off and the old Gosling and McAdams look NOTHING like the past Gosling and McAdams at all.....

Well they do if they had changed facial shape and had been involved in some kind of serious car accident…. Anyway it made me have that fuzzy feeling of wanting some kind of great epic romance which I have not had since I saw Shakespeare In Love. (Yes I know.)

Then we move onto Mulholland Drive, which I have my doubts about as a film, mainly due to the extreme amounts of hype I have heard about it before viewing, however I feel I need to watch it a couple more times before I appreciate it (and I was really tired that evening). But the one thing which is ever so right in it is the relationship between Naomi Watts and Laura Harrings as two ladies who fall in love due to one of them having amnesia (supposedly.) Before they get together you can sense the sexual tension between the pair, and when they do get it on a thousand eleven year old boys cry out in joy, but aside from that they manage to convince as two women who are sexually attracted to each other in an almost animalistic way despite their innocent personas with Watts even stating “Have you ever done this before?” This was one of the major hints that something in the first half of the film was incredibly odd, (other then Watt’s girl next door style acting) the fact that their sexy time was a bit too sexy for their day time personas.

Now on to the “controversial” film that was Lust, Caution the sexually explicit nature of it getting more press attention then praise. This Ang Lee directed film is a beautifully shot, well crafted tale of obsession and betrayal. It stars Tang Wei as a young student who seduces and has an affair with Tony Leung Chiu Wai, encouraged by her patriotic student friends who feel this general could be the downfall of China. Her aim is to make him vulnerable prey for assassination, but instead she gets caught in a sexually orientated power struggle of a relationship with a man who she finds herself if not falling for but emphasizing with. The sex scenes are not erotic, instead they showcase how Wai goes from dominating and humiliating her to compassion and love which is showcased by the shift from brutality to tenderness. Their claustrophobic and dangerous relationship is utterly convincing and the only way they could have cemented the power struggle (which can not be described in your simple earth words) is with sex scenes of this nature, it draws you into their self destructive union and makes you feel sympathy for both characters moral dilemmas, basically its amazing but the sex scenes make it even better and not in the way you think.

A couple of films that do not have sexual chemistry apart from Made Of Honour:

Nine Songs – dear god the least unsexy sex in the world from the unsexiest couple in the world who have rubbish sex.

The Dark Knight: Bale and Gyllenhal fancy each other as much as a brother and sister (if they are not into incest)

The X Files disaster: Mulder + beard + Scully + talking about work in bed = shit

I think we have all learnt something from this.

Brand's Bedtime

Russell Brand starring in his first ever family film for Disney ?

It's called Bedtime Stories.

He stars alongside Adam Sandler, Guy Pearce and Courtney Cox in the comedy, which tells the story of Skeeter Bronson, a hassled architect, whose life turns upside down after the bedtime stories he tells his niece and nephew begin to come true.

Russell's character then suggests Skeeter he make use of the phenomenon to gain him some advantages - with hilarious consequences, etc, blah blah blah.

Trailer ? Here.

C'mon Kids ! Chip In !

The following is gleaned from the latest popbitch email ...

We told you that Chris Morris' terror cell
comedy had been rejected by a fearful Channel 4
and BBC. It seems they have a history of
this. Muslim comedian Omar Mazouk was to
present a mockumentary about misguided
suicide bombers for BBC but this was also
nixed. He took the idea to a TV network in
Denmark instead, where it's getting rave reviews.

And putting two fingers up to TV commissioners,
Morris is turning his Jihadi sitcom into a
film. He's got producers at Warpfilm and a
distributor. All he needs now is enough money
to make the film. Which is where we come in.
Popbitch readers donating between 25 and 100
quid to help get the film made will get the
chance to be in it. So get out your cheque book
and burkha and email:
fundingmentalism@warpfilms.com

Chris would not deny or confirm that recruits
who sign up will also get a free al-Qaeda
explosives handbook.

Alexy Likey Gondry

Study 1: The Science Of Sleep

It is an engaging love affair of a film which masterfully fulfills the subconscious mind from a dreams versus reality set up.
Creatively playing out what is actually thought, including: Fears of rejection, love, random ideas and sex (to name a few). It is a battle within ones self to try and embrace love instead of being scared of the consequences.
There’s an array of emotions that tactfully embodies Stephane (the immense Gael Garcia Bernal), such as the drowning in jealously. A natural reaction everyone goes through the initial stages of caring for someone. Embracing his darkest fears of rejection is an example of this is the confusion of love. Ah, love. Wonderful love. Horrible, sickly depressing, beautiful love that makes you fly through erratic emotions like you have never done before.
At points it makes us think about what’s happening, is it real or imagination?

The creative connection with the main characters Stephane (the immense Gael Garcia Bernal) and Stephanie (Charlotte Gainsbourgh) is charmingly fun-filled, watching them both spark of each others thoughts. You realise they bounce of each other as they begin to remember specifically what each other says. That connection of feelings explodes to the point where you can see them enjoying each others company.

Gondry portrays a feeling of growth upon returning to the room Stephane grew up in as a child, that sense of outgrowing your environment yet, remembering the imagination that helped him grow.

The cinematography works so very well weather it is mixing in the crochet surroundings, playing with the mis-en-scène to show the viewer each dream, random thought, memory or idea.

Reminiscent of that of Being John Malkovich strange characters Serge (Sacha Bourdo) and Martine (Aurelia Petit) pop up. Plus the exceptional performance of Guy (Alain Chabat), a maverick middle aged man with experience and bluntness.

Guy: “I saw an old man smiling in the park sitting down; you know what he was thinking about?”

Stephane: “His grand children?”

Guy: “Don’t answer if you don’t know the question! I know what the old man was thinking about, it was all the dirty things he did as a young man.”

A charming culmination of emotion, artistic talent and the creative imagination of a genuine artist extraordinaire.

Viva Michel Gondry.

Film Trivia ! Everybody Loves The Stuff. Yay For Film Trivia !!!

Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind
The memory erasing company, Lacuna Inc., takes its name from the Latin word meaning a cavity, hollow, or dip, especially a pool or pond. The idea was brought to Michel Gondry by his friend the artist Pierre Bismuth who suggested, "You get a card in the mail that says: someone you know has just erased you from their memory..."

The opening credits appear 18 minutes into the film, at the end of the first reel.
Based on the following quote from an Alexander Pope poem:

How happy is the blameless vestal's lot !
The world forgetting, by the world forgot.
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind !
Each pray'r accepted, and each wish resign'd.

Despite the fact that Charlie Kaufman's script and Michel Gondry's visual concepts were closely followed, the actors were allowed many chances to improvise. Elijah Wood and Mark Ruffalo improvised extensively, and much of the dialog between Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet resulted from videotaped rehearsal sessions during which the two actors became close by sharing tales of their real life relationships and heartbreaks.

The computer used during the procedure is actually an Amstrad PPC (Portable Personal Computer) from the early 1990s.

The scene where Joel and Clementine watch the circus go through the streets was made up on the spot, as the film crew and cast happened to be working nearby and Michel Gondry decided it could work well in the film. The part where Clementine disappears suddenly is one of Gondry's favorite moments of the film, as Jim Carrey didn't know Kate Winslet was going to disappear and Gondry likes it because Carrey's face appears so saddened. When the sound blanks out in the final film, Carrey is actually saying "Kate?"

To help promote the film, a fully functional website was created for Lacuna purporting to provide memory erasure. The only giveaway is the link to watch Joel Barish "experience the procedure", which links to the movie's official site.

When Joel is in his head and is visiting his session of the erasing process, no special effects were used to show the two Joels in the one scene. Jim Carrey had to take off his hat and jacket when he was not in shot and had to quickly sit down in the chair and visa-versa when he has to stand up.

Virtually all of the most bizarre and fascinating scenes in this film were created with old fashioned camera, editing, lighting and prop/set tricks. The use of digital effects was very limited. The striking kitchen scene with Joel as a child was created with an elaborate forced perspective set-up similar to some used by Peter Jackson in the Lord Of The Rings trilogy.
Reporters tried to interview Jim Carrey as the unplanned scene with Joel and Clementine at the street parade was being filmed. If you listen closely, you can hear somebody shout "Speak to me!" at Jim Carrey.

Initially throughout the train scene, the music was supposed to fill up the gap during the silence between Joel and Clem until writer Charlie Kaufman suggested to do the opposite. Music was then played when Joel and Clem talked and paused when they paused.

In the credits there appears the line "Leksell Sterotactic System courtesy of Electra Intstruments"; this is bizarre-looking head gear for brain surgery.

The audio for the scene in which Joel and Clementine appear as children in Joel's memory while their adult voices converse was recorded on location, rather than dubbed later in a studio.

Director Michel Gondry felt it was better to have Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet reacting to the children playing their characters as it happened.

Unnoticed visual effects where used in the movie, that were not planned while shooting. In one shot Clem is walking on the street, while a car falls in the background. The whole background was replaced with a CG-background, including Clem's other leg which disappeared, so the remaining leg was done with CGI. Another shot was the house Clem and Joel were breaking into, which collapses in a 4-second shot. All in the shot was done CG.

SPOILER: The original script featured a cut beginning and ending sequence that took place in the future. In the end, an older Clementine comes in to have the procedure done and a look at her screen shows that she's had the procedure done multiple times and all of them involved Joel. At the very end of the script, an older Joel calls Clementine to ask why she hasn't called, but the technicians performing the procedure erase his message. Other cuts in the original script include a montage of memories people wanted erased, including a soldier seeing his dead friend on a battlefield and a girl who was raped at a young age.

Seven whole minutes of The Day The Earth Stood Still for you !
You lucky pups ! And thank you to Markus (again) for the hook up.

The Princess Of Nebraska On YouTube

I'm feeling very tired today. I'm so overworked...

YouTube launched its Screening Room channel a while back, offering a place for quality indie films to be available worldwide. So far, they only have short films.

The Princess Of Nebraska will be the first feature-length film by a studio released on YouTube.

"The Princess Of Nebraska is about a young woman from China who tries to locate her identity through different kinds of new media...The piece was shot with this kind of mentality with various kinds of easily accessible digital sources. I am very excited that the distribution will be consistent with the way the piece was conceived and produced."

It premieres free of charge on YouTube October 17th. Could this be the future ?

Films I Would Like To See Being Made

Here is my definitive list of films I would like Hollywoodland to make in the coming years, completely derived from TV shows, adverts and graphic novels that not have yet been plundered for their creative wealth.

Preacher

This epic graphic novel written by Garth Ennis is surely in dire need of a big screen outing ? (That was a pleading question mark in case an ambitious director reads this and is looking for projects.) It has all the darkness of Frank Miller's work (if not more) and is about four hundred times cleverer (possibly not a word) and they adapt five of his novels a day.

The lovely synopsis is this: an angel and a devil have a bit of sexy time which leads to a religious deviation being born which is immediately captured and locked away by God. It eventually escapes and inhabits the soul of a disgruntled preacher, giving him the power to command anyone to do anything.

i.e -

Preacher: "Fetch me some cheese"

Person: "OK"

The Preacher decides to challenge God to an epic battle after hearing he has deserted heaven and the books document his journey to find him/her/it.... but that is merely the tip of the metaphorical iceberg....subplots include a love story, vampires and a man having sex with a woman fashioned entirely out of hot dog meat. All gold.

Also atheist commentary in films always goes down so well in Hollywood, and it never gets toned down to fit in with the bigoted views of middle America…….....(yep check out my satire.) OK this film would have to be British made so it can keep some of its more murky religious aspects and Paddy Constantine could play the Preacher

The Sandman

Surely one of the most famous and genre defying graphic novels like ever (apart from Watchmen I know, but I secretly thought this was better,) Neil Gaiman's genius story chronicling the life and adventures of the lord of dreaming and his brothers and sisters combining everything from Greek mythology to Shakespearean origins.

Obviously the many threads of the novel would mean it would have to be about six hours long or a trilogy but think of the salivating geeks' little happy faces. Someone really hot would have to play the Sandman obviously, maybe Ben Barnes because he has nice hair ?

They have adapted a lot of Neil Gaiman's lesser works in recent times with impressive but flawed results (Mirrormask, Stardust) isn’t it time someone took up this challenge ?

Spaced: The Movie

OK so this is a stupid idea and I know this as I type it, but you can't erase text so I most continue on this tangent... some might see it as chasing on the coat tails of Sex And The City in the whole from TV show to film inception, but this would be different.

For starters it would not set feminism back fifty years and make me feel guilty for having ovaries, and secondly it would reunite the best comedy pairing in years. Daisy and Tim probably still have that sexual tension, unless they are together from the get go and Billy Connolly is in it as a paedophile priest…..

They would be able to spoof a whole new generation of film, and this time Edgar Wright would have a budget so everything would be shinier and their bedsit would have a bigger TV and Tim would probably make a joke about Lego Star Wars….

The Lost Girls

Have you seen this Graphic Novel by Alan Moore ? I bought it in America without knowing what it was about, without knowing that it was not on sale in the UK because the estate of J M Barrie did not like the depiction of Peter Pan in it as a child fiddler.

Yes it’s that kind of comic book. I thought it was detailing what happened to Wendy from Peter Pan, Alice from the Wonderland and Dorothy from Kansas after the original novels. I did not realise it was just about sex. And how much they had and are now having. This would be funny to adapt, maybe just to be reenacted and put on YouPorn or something instead.

The Magic Step Shoes

These amazing shoes from Clarks and my somewhat uneventful childhood were promoted with this amazing advert which had so much potential for expansion. It had mythology by the bundle depicting a girl escaping from an evil witch into a forest of dreams to open a box, the key to which was on the bottom of your shoes !

You were part of the adventure ! But this premise however left me wanting more, for example why was the box magical ? What was in it ? Was it cheesecake ? Why did the witch not like the girl so much ? Why did she not just go to Clarks and buy the shoes ? In fact maybe I could make up the rest of the story and play it out in my head.

Eldor

Once again this is a slither of a childhood memory, but this was a child’s TV show which scared the very bajesus out of me, and I think it was only on for one season maybe due to it’s very dark nature. Also I may have dreamt it.....

Anyway these posh kids discover a portal in their garden which leads to a land called Eldor in which lots of bad men on horseback live, and they want to break through to our world. The bratty kids do something which leads to the the fragile wall protecting them begin to wear thin, and these scary men with big masks on begin to appear in their garden planning to attack their house.

It is a little bit like The Spiderwick Chronicles or Narnia but without the Jesus stuff or the rubbish CGI, and it had the edge of menace about it that was not present in those films.

And finally ...

Carnivale The Movie

This originally HBO series which aired on FX late at night was shown for two series before being cancelled for its high budget and low viewing figures. Visually stunning with a cinematic quality rarely seen in television, it was set during the American Depression in the dust bowl. The series followed the lives of people in a traveling Carnivale around America focusing on Ben, a young man with strange healing qualities.

It also followed a Russian immigrant Preacher with seemingly hypnotic powers and explored the odd connection between the two... it was basically the most slow burning series in the world and it took about eight episodes before you had a inkling of what the main plot was and even then it moved very slowly.

However the pay off was ultimately rewarding with well rounded characters and a suspenseful story line which was speculated on endlessly on the typey box called "The Internet". It was such a shame it’s themes and ideas could not be fully developed before the series was cancelled and the ending rushed out.

If shortened and kept with the same quality this could be a engaging and beautiful film which explores morality, religion and the supernatural. Think X Men filmed in the same style as There Will Be Blood except there is only two mutants !

Also my brother deleted the very last episode off of Sky+ before I got a chance to watch it so I would like to know what happened, and as we know the multi-billion pound movie industry mostly evolves around my face.

Speaking during a tiny press junket thing for the Iron Man DVD, Jon Favreau talked up a bit about Number 2. questions regarding sequel. Collider states he'd love to do it in 3D and he'd love to shoot part of the sequel in IMAX.

Thank you to you who sent this my way. Dunno why you want to remain anon.

EDIT - Listen to the interview.
