DVD Review - Shock Labyrinth 3D

While the debate rages on as to whether 3D is truly the path that all films will tread in the future or if it's just another flash in the pan gimmick we will be treated to a variety of eye-poppers. The latest contribution into this mighty pantheon that will take it's place alongside such greats as Clash of the Titans, Resident Evil: Afterlife and Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience is Shock Labyrinth 3D.

Bridesmaids Poster

Bridesmaids is the new movie from producer Judd Apatow, and I think I am actually looking forward to it.

Film Review with Robert Mann - How Do You Know

How Do You Know ***

Writer/director James L. Brooks is probably best known for his work as writer and executive producer on The Simpsons but he has also entered the world of live action film directing, having made several highly acclaimed films for which he has won or been nominated for Academy Awards, including wins in the Best Picture, Best Director and Best Writing,

Film Review with Robert Mann - Hereafter

Hereafter **

As a director, Clint Eastwood has made westerns, crime thrillers, character based dramas, war movies and true to life biographies but one thing he has never done is something more fantastical, until now that is. With a distinctly supernatural theme, fantasy drama Hereafter really is brand new territory for the director.

The trailer for Anuvahood has been about a few days now, so I thought I would share it with you, if you haven't seen it already...

Stumbled across this short film.  It's called Blackbird.

Film Review with Robert Mann - Tangled

Tangled 3D ****½
Tangled 2D ****

Walt Disney Pictures has a very long tradition of producing movie fairytales about princesses and has produced many classic movies in this particular subgenre, among them such beloved animated features as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast.

James Bond January - Quantum Of Solace

Quantum of Solace *****

Following up Casino Royale, the fantastic 2006 reinvention of the James Bond franchise, was always going to be an extremely daunting task. That film was widely regarded as a masterpiece on its release, and rightfully so, so it understandable that topping it would be an extremely difficult, or perhaps even impossible thing to do.

James Bond January - Casino Royale

Casino Royale *****

Casino Royale has been the subject of much criticism since it was announced that actor Daniel Craig would be the new 007. I was one of those who were opposed to his casting and I was expecting this film to be a bitter disappointment.

If you're in the mood for a piece of trashy as hell action tomfoolery you could do at lot worse, or maybe you couldn't who I am to say, than Circle Of Pain.

Film Review with Robert Mann - The Dilemma

The Dilemma *

While it could hardly be said that he is one of the greatest directors working in Hollywood today, Ron Howard has nonetheless developed a reputation for directing quality movies, only occasionally slipping up with a dud and then one that still has its fair share of redeeming qualities.

I Spit On Your Grave 2011 Review By Lostzombie

Another week and another remake this time its the turn of I Spit On Your Grave.

Telling the story of a young woman played by Sarah Butler who decides in true horror movie style that its a good idea to write her new book in a isolated cabin in the woods of some redneck us state ( she is a horror writer so maybe we can give her that one)

Film Review with Robert Mann - Black Swan

Black Swan ***

2011 is a very big year for Natalie Portman. She’s co-starring in one of the year’s big superhero movies, Thor, starring alongside Ashton Kutcher in adult romantic comedy No Strings Attached and co-starring in the new comedy from the director of Pineapple Express, Your Highness.

DVD Review - The Hole

* Spoiler ahoy!*

Dane, 17, and Lucas, 10, are uprooted for the dozenth time by their mother as they try to keep out of reach of their abusive father. Moving into a small town where the diner still appears to be the hot spot of activity Dane and Lucas discover something much more interesting in their basement - a bottomless hole.

J. Van Auken Interview

J. Van Auken has been making movies his entire life. He was trained as a cinematographer at Columbia College Chicago, and recently signed to direct his first feature, due out in 2012. Until then he is in the midst of making his short film, The Last Cosmonaut.

The Task Trailer

A reality show set in an abandoned penitentiary. Things start going wrong fast, and soon the prison becomes very real to the reality show contestants.

Husk Trailer

An interesting looking film about a group of young adults stranded in the middle of nowhere (wouldn't be horror without that) near a vast cornfield. Things are astir and sooner or later, someone will be going missing.

If you have a fear of scarecrows, or are a crow, watch at your own risk. I on the other hand think it looks wonderful and can't wait to see the film.

Alien Vs Ninja

This look insane.

Written and directed by Seiji Chiba, Alien Vs Ninja is one insane, action-packed, martial arts-meets-sci-fi gore-fest that delivers everything its perfectly descriptive title promises.

Film Review with Robert Mann - Morning Glory

Morning Glory ***½

The name of producer, writer and director J.J. DVD Review: Puppet Master - Axis Of Evil

After a young man accidentally inherits a collection of creepy puppets from an old man, he stumbles into an allegedly intriguing plot by Nazi and Japanese agents to blow up a munitions plant in America. Luckily for him, the aforementioned puppets can come to life, and so decides to use them to foil the villainous plot. Rather than - you know - alert the authorities...

The Other Superheroes: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Whenever I think of superheroes that don't get enough praise and attention, I think of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. A lot of people I know would say "But they aren't superheroes! they're mutant turtles who know martial arts. They don't have super powers!". Well Batman doesn't have any powers, yet he's one of the most iconic superheroes ever.

Film Review with Robert Mann - Confessions

Confessions *****

Best known for his critically acclaimed films Kamikaze Girls and Memories of Matsuko, Japanese writer and director Tetsuya Nakashima has developed a reputation for creating surreal candy-coloured worlds full of chaos and confusion in his films. However, the latest effort from the genre-busting auteur is a very different animal to the filmmaker’s past works, being a considerably darker but no less chaotic piece of work.

The Hole - Released Today On Blu-Ray & DVD

Released today, just in time for "Blue Monday", is Joe Dante's return to the horror genre he thrives in so anarchically. Having brought us cult classics like Piranha, The Howling and Gremlins, it's been sometime since Mr. Dante gave us something new to grit our teeth over (he made an episode for the Masters of Horror TV series but this is cinema!).

Film Review with Robert Mann - The Green Hornet

The Green Hornet 3D ***
The Green Hornet 2D ***

The first of numerous superhero movies to be released in 2011 (and the first ever superhero movie to be released in 3D, three others following this summer), The Green Hornet (not to be confused with this summer’s Green Lantern) finds its original inspirations in a very different source than most superheroes.

The Brave - Trailer

Whilst I was watching A Serbian Film the other day I got to thinking about Johnny Depp's directorial debut The Brave.

Again, a very bleak story of a man who agrees to "star" in a snuff film in return for a large sum of money which will set his family up for life. It's one hell of a premise and quietly upsetting throughout as Depp's character spends his final days cherishing moments with his loved ones and taking revenge on those he feels has wronged him.

Review - A Serbian Film

*** stars

Milos is a former porn star. But not just any porn star. He is "the best there ever was". Now retired and living a quiet life with his beautiful wife and precocious young son, he spends his days drinking Jack and admiring his old films. A pleasant, yet underwhelming existence is also soured by money issues until an old friend brings Milos a proposition. Come out of retirement for one last big score and the money worries will be over. So far so heist movie. Expect the women bringing Milos the proposition fits into a PVC dress better than Marlon Brando could have done in The Score.

Film Review with Robert Mann - The Next Three Days

The Next Three Days ***½

Paul Haggis is a screenwriter with a truly enviable list of credits behind him. An award-winner who, in 2006, became the first person to write two Best Film Oscar winners back-to-back – 2004’s Million Dollar Baby directed by Clint Eastwood and 2005’s Crash which Haggis directed himself and for which he also won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay as well as receiving an additional four nominations, including one for Best Direction –

Grotesque Trailer

Ahead of a review of A Serbian Film a trailer of the most recent film banned outright by the BBFC.

Good old Japan, the masters of extreme cinema. Directed by Koji Shiraishi, Grotesque is the simple story of two people being tortured by a deranged lunatic.

More lovely things to follow!

Hobo With A Shotgun

This trailer has been playing the rounds for a few months but just in case anyone's missed it...

Rutger Hauer plays the Hobo. The trailer gives the impression of a much more nihilistic affair than the delightful title would suggest but I'm sure there will be plenty of over blown stunts to enjoy. Plus it's Rutger Hauer with a shotgun. Can't wait!

Road To Ghostbusters 3

Over the last few months it seems like I can't go on any movie news website or forum without there being a new scrap of news about the proposed, third Ghostbusters film in development.

Literally months of chatter about scripts being written, re-written. Firstly Ivan Reitman wasn't on board, now apparently he's spear heading the whole thing. Dan Aykroyd took over writing duties unhappy with a plot that primarily involved a young group of Ghostbusters.

Drive Angry Trailer & Comp

Drive Angry is the new film from Nicolas Cage.

In the newest 3D action-adventure from the director of My Bloody Valentine, Drive Angry stars Cage as Milton, a hardened felon who has broken out of hell for one last chance at redemption. Intent on stopping a vicious cult who murdered his daughter, he has three days to stop them before they sacrifice her baby beneath a full moon.

Film Review with Robert Mann - Season of the Witch

Season of the Witch *

Neither a remake of the little known 1972 George A. Romero film Jack’s Wife – which was released on video in the states as Season of the Witch – or the much derided 1982 horror “sequel” Halloween III: Season of the Witch, 2011’s Season of the Witch has nonetheless become guaranteed to quickly disappear into obscurity like the former and has already developed a reputation that is, if anything, worse than that of the latter.

Film Review with Robert Mann - 127 Hours

127 Hours ****

British director Danny Boyle has always been a filmmaker to attract a fair amount of critical acclaim (even if the box office results for this films haven’t always reflected this) but the runaway critical, commercial and awards success of his last film, Slumdog Millionaire, have really raised the bar for him and with that the level of expectation for whatever his next film might be.

Film Review with Robert Mann - Review of 2010 Part 2

The Best and Worst of 2010

Top 10 Movies

1) Inception ****

Following up a film as masterful as The Dark Knight was never going to be an easy task for Christopher Nolan but with Inception he created a blockbuster every bit as brilliant as his previous directorial effort, if not more so.

Film Review with Robert Mann - The Way Back

The Way Back ***

The Way Back is one of those films that purports to be “inspired by real events”. As is often the case, though, this statement is one that should definitely be taken with a pinch of salt, not because the film itself is unfaithful to the truth exactly but rather because its literary inspiration has been revealed to somewhat untruthful itself.

Film Review with Robert Mann - Arthur and the Great Adventure

Arthur and the Great Adventure *

Director Luc Besson is best known for his distinctive thrillers, two of his best known and most highly appreciated movies probably being Leon and The Fifth Element, but in 2007 we saw the release of his first foray into a very different kind of filmmaking – family films. Adapted from the 2002 children’s book Arthur and the Minimoys and its 2003 sequel Arthur and the Forbidden City, Arthur and the Invisibles, a mix of live action and animation, was also the director’s first attempt at animation and the result was not very pretty.

Film Review with Robert Mann - Love & Other Drugs

Love & Other Drugs ***

Anyone who has seen the trailer for Love & Other Drugs could easily be forgiven for expecting yet another tired and predictable Hollywood romantic comedy with little to set it apart from the countless other films released this year that such a description could be so readily applied to – bad marketing department.
