Savage Streets: The Greatest 80’s Film Or The Greatest Film Ever Made? By Damien Sage

Savage Streets (1984)
Starring Linda Blair, John Vernon and Linnea Quigley
Directed By Danny Steinmann

I have a long standing love affair with Linda Blair, in fact she would be my favorite actress were not Sigourney Weaver born (and… a much better actress.) Linda is a strange, mystical creature, born into the world of hardcore, gritty 70’s cinema, but made for the glossy, explosion (and exploitation) heavy, tit-filled, cheesy cinema of the 80’s.

Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas

I remember seeing this film back in the late 90's when it first came out and thinking "Shit, what kind of drugs was the Director taking when he made this film" but that was long before I appreciated the warped yet brilliant literary works of the Legendary Hunter S. Thompson. After watching it again a few years later (and having a bit of knowledge on Hunter) I finally realized how skillful Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro were as actors and how masterful Terry Gilliam was as a Director.

(Belated) DVD Reviews: What War May Bring & Eaters

Yet another straight to DVD review double-bill, you lucky people. They're rather late, but hopefully Mr. Sledge will forgive me for that. Without further ado...

Firstly we have What War May Bring. Directed by Academy Award winner Claude Lelouch, it has been rather miss-sold here in the UK (it's actual title should be What Love May Bring) as an historical action epic. While it certainly contains shakily handled WW2 combat, including a Normandy Landings scene that is unlikely to have Spielberg worrying, it is more of a human drama. Set in Nazi occupied France, it follows the love life of Ilva (Audrey Dana), a young French woman who keeps falling for the wrong men (a Nazi commander, two American GI's at the same time), the film appears to be a passion project for Lelouch, with it being touted as ten years in the making.

Random Video - RIP\TORN - Systematic Failure (2009)

On November 30, 2007, RIP\TORN released their first ever single Systematic Failure from the album The Last Time For Everything. On November 30, 2009, we here at Static Omega decided to commemorate this event with Systematic Failure (2009). A new video for their new, heavier, more visceral take on their original song. (And make sure you all stick around til the last shot, it's a doozy.)

Enjoy!

"Look. The bloke's been me best mate since 1975. We've had our fall outs from time to time, it's no big deal. Y'know, it's like... if ya Mum stabs ya whaddya do ? Ya don't get upset. Ya don't get angry, ya go, "Shit, Mum's stabbed me, I better get off to the hospital."

Film Review with Robert Mann - The Hangover Part II

The Hangover Part II **

Two summers ago, a Hollywood movie came seemingly out of nowhere to take cinemas by storm. For once it wasn’t a big budget effects blockbuster that was busting blocks at the box office but rather a low budget raucous comedy named The Hangover, a film that not only proved hugely successful in its own right but gave some of summer 2009’s biggest movies a run for their money, an impressive level of word of mouth being generated after the film brought down the house at film industry conference ShoWest with its debut trailer that showcased the film’s simple but ingenious concept, smartly handled gags and hilarious appearance by Mike Tyson and tested very strongly with audiences at test screenings. Warner Bros Pictures clearly knew they were on to something big before the film was even released as they had already set director Todd Phillips to write a follow up alongside Craig Mazin and Scot Armstrong – replacing first film writers Jon Lucas and Scott Moore – in April 2009 and actively committed to making the sequel that same month, a full two months before the film’s release on June 5th – something which is unusual for any movie studio, the common practice being to wait to see box office results before announcing a sequel to anything that isn’t based on an established property.

Classic Trailer - A Bucket Of Blood

A few years back I went on a quest to watch a host of films revered for their terribleness. One such film was The Killer Shrews. Fun as it was it was definitely a bad film. But along with it in a 2 for 1 DVD package a Roger Corman "classic". The title alone jumped out to me as the name of the bar from the infamous song Stackerlee or Stagger Lee or Stackolee.

Film Review with Robert Mann - Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2: Rodrick Rules

Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2: Rodrick Rules ***½

Considering that, as the title suggests, they revolve around a rather wimpy lead character, the Diary of a Wimpy Kid films have to date proven surprisingly mighty, their opening weekends at the US box office, where the first film beat up romantic action comedy The Bounty Hunter on its opening weekend and the second one – which was released there in March but is only now getting its UK release – well, sucker punched Sucker Punch on its first weekend, exemplifying this – how often is it that you get to say that two major Hollywood movies have been completely pulverised and totally embarrassed by a little film that, for all intensive purposes, should never have posed any kind of threat to them?

Film Review with Robert Mann - X-Men: First Class

X-Men: First Class *****

While continuing to be popular performers at the box office, the X-Men films have been in a state of disarray in terms of how well received they have been ever since X-Men and X-Men 2 director Bryan Singer bailed on the franchise to direct Superman Returns, leaving the reins in the hands of Rush Hour director Brett Ratner, whose third and final instalment of the original trilogy was much maligned by many a critic and many a fan upon its release back in 2006. And the woes of the franchise only increased with the first prequel movie X-Men Origins: Wolverine which, despite being directed by a filmmaker who showed considerable promise, was even worse received than The Last Stand, with the film that was released in cinemas not really being director Gavin Hood’s film at all but rather a bastardisation resulting from 20th Century Fox studio head Tom Rothman’s effective hijacking of the film and the bringing on board of Superman director Richard Donner to shadow direct.
